Korea won a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security COuncil on Oct. 19for the second time after holding a similar position in 1996. South Korea was elected to a two-year term as a non-permanent member state between 2013 and 2014 at the UNSC elections held at UN headquarters in New York. Picking up this seat, South Korea is expected to have a stronger right to speak on North Korean issues that are subject to UNSC's sanctions. Now, Korea can participate in debates on North Korean issues as a member of the UN Security Council. This will give a significant deterrent power over the North. Korea will be able to position itself as a more dominant player in light of deepening comfort women issues, territorial and resources disputes in East Asia such as one between China and Japan ver remote islands in the East China Sea, and the US's relative economic and military decline. I hope Korea will use this seat to strengthen their roles and contributions fitting their national power in solidifying peace on the Korean peninsula and maintaining international peace and security.
